Guri City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Baek Kyunghyun) announced on January 7 that it was finally selected for the '2026 Crime Prevention Urban Environment Design Project,' for which it applied to Gyeonggi Province in September last year. The city will now begin full-scale implementation of the crime prevention urban environment design project in the area surrounding the Guri Comprehensive Social Welfare Center in Topyeong-dong.

The 'Crime Prevention Urban Environment Design Project,' led by Gyeonggi Province, is a highly competitive public project, with only two out of 31 cities and counties in the province selected.

With the selection of the 'Guri Comprehensive Social Welfare Center area' as this year's target site, Guri City has now been chosen for the 'Gyeonggi Province Crime Prevention Urban Environment Design Project' for the fifth time, following Angol-ro in Gyomun 1-dong in 2019, Wonsutaek-ro in Sutaek 2-dong in 2020, the Guri Market area in 2021, and Geombaero in 2022.

Through this project, Guri City plans to systematically improve crime-prone factors in the area, focusing on the restaurant district and low-density residential areas around the Guri Comprehensive Social Welfare Center. The city will invest a total project budget of 500 million won, including 150 million won in provincial funds, to implement improvements by next year such as: ▲enhancing lighting environments ▲eliminating blind spots ▲reorganizing pedestrian routes ▲installing crime prevention facilities ▲introducing resident-participatory safety design, and more.

This area, in particular, is densely populated with restaurants, bars, and multi-family housing. With the recent increase in foot traffic, concerns have been continuously raised about crimes such as alcohol-related violence, sexual offenses, and juvenile delinquency. Through this project, Guri City aims not only to improve the physical environment but also to enhance the sense of psychological safety that citizens experience.

Mayor Baek Kyunghyun of Guri City stated, "Crime prevention urban environment design is more than just facility improvement; it is an important urban policy that protects citizens' daily lives and safety. We will continue to do our utmost to create a safe urban environment where citizens can live with peace of mind."

Meanwhile, Guri City plans to carry out the project in cooperation with residents and related organizations, and after completion, maximize the crime prevention effect through satisfaction surveys and ongoing management and operation.
