Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Tops Insurance Industry in Patent Registrations and Applications Last Year

31 Patent Applications Filed, 16 Patents Registered

Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance announced on January 7 that it ranked first in the insurance industry last year for both the number of patent registrations and applications.

In the previous year, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance filed a total of 31 patent applications and received 16 patent registrations. The company has maintained its top position in the industry for two consecutive years, following its achievement in 2024.

This accomplishment is attributed to the combination of employees’ field-oriented problem awareness and an internal support system for job-related inventions. Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance has continuously refined its systems and policies to ensure that ideas generated during practical work-especially those aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and customer convenience through digital and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies-can be developed into patents.

The company operates a “patent management system” that supports the entire process from idea proposal to patent application and registration. By leveraging in-house patent attorneys and other experts, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance has established an environment where employees can quickly assess the patentability of ideas that arise during their work.

Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance has incorporated intellectual property education into its new employee onboarding program, enabling new hires to recognize the importance of job-related inventions and patents from the outset. The company also publishes an internal patent magazine to further raise awareness of intellectual property rights and encourage broader participation among employees.

The patents secured by Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance are being utilized in a wide range of areas, including product and service improvement, operational innovation, and new business development. Examples include calculating automobile insurance discounts based on public transportation usage, insurance products compensating for subway delays, sales management tools, and home risk assessment solutions. These innovations have enhanced customer convenience and contributed to building a social safety net. In recognition of these achievements, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance became the first company in the insurance industry to receive a commendation from the Commissioner of the Korean Intellectual Property Office on “Invention Day” in May of last year.

Kim Kwangjun, Head of Legal Support at Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, stated, “This achievement is the result of all employees’ commitment to innovation, supported by the institutional backing of the legal team. We will continue to advance our job-related invention system and patent management framework to further strengthen the company’s competitiveness.”
