Character Sculptures Installed Along Citizen's River
A Cultural Space in Everyday Life... Strengthening the Identity of the "Comic City"
The city walking trails in Bucheon, frequented by local residents, have been transformed into a cultural space featuring cartoon characters.
On January 7, the Bucheon City Government and the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency announced the creation of a "Webtoon Theme Park" by installing cartoon character sculptures around the "Citizen's River" area in Sang-dong and on the pedestrian overpass near Jung-dong IC. Rather than constructing large-scale facilities, the city added content to existing small parks that see heavy foot traffic, allowing people to experience the identity of a "comic city" in their daily lives.
A total of twelve sculptures have been installed. Five symbolic characters representing Bucheon are placed throughout the area, including "Bucheon Handsome," the city's mascot; "Mandeok-i," the mascot of the comic festival; and "Hera·Bora" from Bucheon FC. In addition, four works by cartoonists, such as "Mungke" by Han Sungmin, are featured, along with three neighborhood characters designed directly by local residents, such as "Gorisani" (Gogangbon-dong) and "Boksungi" (Songnae 1-dong), adding further significance to the project.
Paek Jonghun, President of the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency, stated, "The Webtoon Theme Park is a space where comics naturally blend into the daily lives of citizens," adding, "We will continue to fill various parts of the city with unique comic content that embodies Bucheon's distinct character."
