Wonju City Accelerates Past 360,000 Residents, Proving Itself as a City That Attracts People

Wonju City Sees Population Rise by 1,030 Over Previous Year
Maintaining Steady Growth Momentum

As of the end of December last year, the population of Wonju City stood at 363,194, marking an increase of 1,030 people compared to the previous year. This continued growth trend positions Wonju City as an emerging city where people gather and the future is visible, driven by the expansion of future growth foundations and improvements in residential conditions.

According to resident registration population statistics from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Wonju City has consistently recorded steady population inflows, even as other regions in the province have experienced ongoing population decline in recent years. As a result, Wonju has established itself as a city where people choose to stay and newcomers continue to arrive.

These achievements are attributed to several factors: the expansion of four industrial complexes and the establishment of a semiconductor industry base, which have attracted companies and created quality jobs; the confirmation of the Wonju Nvidia Education Center and the establishment of the Korea Semiconductor Education Center, contributing to an excellent educational infrastructure; various support programs for children and youth, such as the Youth Dream Realization Voucher Project, and customized population policies that make Wonju a desirable place to live; and the region's top-tier transportation network, including three expressways and KTX rail lines.

In particular, despite internal and external economic uncertainties and sluggish domestic demand, Wonju City has actively attracted businesses, bringing in 34 companies so far and creating 1,894 new jobs.

Wonju City is not resting on these achievements. The city plans to further solidify its foundation for future high-tech industries through the groundbreaking of the Mega Data Urban High-Tech Industrial Complex and the establishment of AI and semiconductor infrastructure. In addition, it aims to expand the Dream Realization Voucher Project, enhance cultural and sports facilities, and improve living and environmental infrastructure. The city also plans to expand its transportation network by including four routes in the 6th National and Local Road Construction Plan, with the goal of implementing policies that every citizen can feel, and advancing as a city of sustainable population growth.

Won Kangsoo, Mayor of Wonju City, stated, "Going forward, we will further strengthen the virtuous cycle where population growth leads to urban growth, based on the belief that population is the key to competitiveness."
