Gwangmyeong to Install Escalators at Gwangmyeong Sageori Station on Line 7

One Up and One Down Escalator to Be Installed on Central Staircase
Completion Scheduled for 2029

The city of Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province, announced on January 6 that it will promote the installation of escalators on the central staircase inside Gwangmyeong Sageori Station on Seoul Subway Line 7 by 2029 to improve convenience for passengers.

To this end, the city signed a basic and detailed design service delegation agreement with Seoul Metro for the escalator installation in the city hall conference room on the same day.

Under the agreement, the city will cover 200 million won for the basic and detailed design service costs for the escalator installation, and Seoul Metro will carry out the service.

The escalators will be installed on the central staircase connecting the first and second basement levels of the station, with two escalators-one for each direction-each 1.2 meters wide. The city plans to complete the installation by 2029.

Gwangmyeong Sageori Station has an average of 41,176 passengers per day (as of 2025), making it the fourth busiest among the 42 stations on Line 7. However, escalators are currently installed at only one of the station's ten entrances, causing inconvenience for citizens. In particular, the narrow width of the sidewalk above ground has limited the possibility of installing escalators at the entrances.

The city explained that it decided to install escalators on the central staircase inside the station, where passenger traffic is concentrated, in order to address these structural limitations and maximize user convenience.

Seungwon Park, Mayor of Gwangmyeong, said, "As demand for Gwangmyeong Sageori Station is expected to continue increasing due to large-scale redevelopment and reconstruction, we will ensure that the installation project proceeds without delay to enhance transportation convenience for citizens."

Mayor Park added, "We will also actively propose measures such as increasing the number of trains on Line 7 to Seoul Metro so that citizens can experience tangible improvements in transportation, such as reduced congestion during commuting hours."
