LG Energy Solution to Supply 20 Billion Won Worth of Batteries for KEPCO's Second ESS Project

LG Energy Solution will supply batteries worth 20 billion won for the Gyeongsan and Soryong energy storage system (ESS) projects for grid stabilization, which are being carried out by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).

According to the battery industry on January 6, KEPCO recently selected Saman Engineering (for the Gyeongsan project) and Daemyung Energy (for the Soryong project) as the winners of the grid stabilization ESS projects. Both companies have decided to use LG Energy Solution batteries, enabling LG Energy Solution to supply ESS project batteries worth 20 billion won.

LG Energy Solution had previously supplied batteries exclusively for the first grid stabilization ESS project. An LG Energy Solution representative stated, "Our technological capabilities, product quality, and previous operational experience are considered to have had a positive impact."

This second grid stabilization ESS project has a total value of 70 billion won and aims to build 300 MW across five substations (Soryong, Nongong, Naju, Gyeongsan, and Sinyeongju). Of this, the Gyeongsan and Soryong segments, worth about 20 billion won, have been ordered first. The Gyeongsan (Gumi City) project consists of 56 MW/51 MWh, and the Soryong (Gunsan City) project also consists of 56 MW/51 MWh. Both projects are scheduled for completion in December this year.

The KEPCO grid stabilization ESS project is a national power grid stabilization initiative aimed at mitigating risks associated with the expansion of renewable energy, such as transmission network bottlenecks, frequency instability, and output fluctuations. The goal is to secure frequency and voltage stability in the grid by building high-power ESS units at substations. Unlike the central contract market, which focuses on long-duration applications, this project requires advanced technical specifications, including rapid response speed and high-power control capabilities.
