One Letter, One Step at a Time... Yeongdeok County Family Center Supports Basic Learning for Multicultural Children in Lower Grades

20 Children Participate in Basic Korean and Math Play-Based Classes

To prevent learning difficulties among children from multicultural families, a basic learning support program for lower grades was implemented.

The Yeongdeok County Family Center (Director: Lee Anguk) conducted 'Basic Learning Support for Lower Grades' classes from January to December 2025 at the center, childcare institutions, and elementary schools.

The classes were organized in groups and held a total of 338 sessions, with around 20 children from multicultural families in the county participating, including preschoolers (ages 6-7) and lower elementary students (ages 8-9). The curriculum focused on basic education in Korean language, mathematics, and reading and writing skills.

For basic Korean, lessons were tailored to the participants' levels and included activities such as stamping consonants and vowels, word card games, and reading essential books together followed by various post-reading activities.

For basic mathematics, age-appropriate board games and worksheets involving counting and basic arithmetic were used to help children who struggle with foundational math enjoy learning in a fun way.

Reflecting feedback from participants in the previous year, a connected experiential learning activity was also held once. Children from multicultural families who took part in the classes shared that although studying was sometimes challenging, they enjoyed it thanks to the variety of engaging methods.

For 2026, the project manager stated, "We will continue to offer a range of programs to help children from multicultural families who need basic learning support improve their foundational academic skills, and we will strive to assist even more participants."
