This unveiling ceremony was held to commemorate the city's re-designation as an "Environmental Education City" in November of last year, following its initial designation in 2022 when the system was first introduced.
The Environmental Education City system is a program run by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, which designates and provides three years of support to local governments with outstanding foundations, achievements, and plans for environmental education, in order to promote environmental education. Yongin City's re-designation as an Environmental Education City is the first case, along with Incheon City and Dobong District in Seoul.
Mayor Lee Sangil of Yongin stated, "This re-designation recognizes the efforts and achievements of all our members in environmental education," adding, "We will strive to play a leading role in the field of environmental education and to create an educational environment in which everyone can participate together." He also said, "We will continue to provide support and encouragement for high-quality environmental education."
With this re-designation, the city has established the foundation for developing and implementing a variety of policies as an Environmental Education City for the next three years, until 2028.
To respond to the era of climate crisis, the city has been implementing various eco-friendly lifestyle policies. Yongin City has established an advanced public-private cooperation model for environmental protection and proposed the "Yongin-type Sustainable Practice Model," which encourages voluntary citizen participation to raise environmental awareness.
In addition, the city has been collaborating with various local organizations, including the Yongin Office of Education, environmental groups, and the Integrated Science Education Research Institute at Dankook University, to establish a high-level environmental education system. The city is also operating a range of initiatives so that citizens can experience and practice environmental protection and culture in their daily lives.
