The exemplary vessel system for marine environmental management recognizes ships that have faithfully carried out activities to prevent marine pollution. It is operated separately for oil tankers of 50 tons or more and general vessels of 200 tons or more. The Donghae Coast Guard comprehensively evaluates factors such as the condition of pollution prevention equipment, preparedness and response systems for pollution incidents, and the legal disposal of waste oil and waste. The evaluation covers a total of 11 criteria, including the crew's awareness of marine pollution prevention and marine conservation.
Last year, Sampyo Cement's 'Sampyo 2' received excellent scores of over 80% in all evaluation criteria and was ultimately selected as an exemplary vessel. Vessels designated as exemplary are exempt from regular inspections for the next three years. In addition, if a vessel receives a fine for violating the Marine Environment Management Act or the Port Air Quality Act, the fine is reduced by half once.
Kim Hwan-gyeong, Chief of the Donghae Coast Guard, stated, "Preventing marine pollution is not only about laws and systems, but also about practical action on site. Through the exemplary vessel system, we will actively identify and support vessels that take the lead in marine environmental management."
A representative from Sampyo Cement said, "We will continue to establish and operate a systematic pollution prevention system to fulfill our social responsibility of preserving the marine ecosystem. Beyond complying with regulations, we aim to foster a culture of voluntary environmental management and become a company that grows together with the local community."
