The police are currently investigating a former aide to Kang Sunwoo, an independent assemblyman, on suspicion of receiving and holding 100 million won in "nomination funds" from the camp of Kim Kyung, a Seoul Metropolitan Council member.
The Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency summoned the former aide, referred to as Mr. A, as a suspect for questioning starting around 7 a.m. on January 6, 2026.
Mr. A is suspected of receiving and holding 100 million won in cash from the camp of Assemblyman Kim.
According to a transcript, Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Byungki met with Assemblyman Kang around April 21, 2022, ahead of the local elections, and asked, "Isn't it true that the 100 million won was received and kept by the secretary general (Mr. A)?" Assemblyman Kang replied, "That's right. I really wasn't thinking at all."
Assemblyman Kang explained, "I repeatedly instructed Mr. A to return the money, and I confirmed that it was returned." However, it has been reported that Mr. A claims to have no knowledge of this matter.
On this day, the police also plan to summon former Gangseo District Mayor Kim Taewoo, who filed complaints against Assemblyman Kang and Councilman Kim for bribery under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, and against Assemblyman Kim for obstruction of business.
