133 Billion Won Investment
Maintenance of the Hapgari Site, the Largest Earthenware Production Center in the Daegaya Region
Goryeong County in North Gyeongsang Province has been finally selected for the regional-scale historical and cultural zone maintenance project organized by the National Heritage Administration.
According to Goryeong County on January 5, as a result of being chosen for this project, the county will invest a total of 13.3 billion won over three years from 2026 to 2028 to improve the historical and cultural environment in the Hapgari area of Ssangnim-myeon, which is known as the largest earthenware production hub in the Daegaya region.
The Hapgari earthenware kiln site, which is the focus of the maintenance project, was confirmed as a significant site through the ‘2025 Historical and Cultural Zone Major Site Excavation Project.’ It is considered a key production facility that mass-produced various types of earthenware buried in the tombs of the Daegaya region, including the Goryeong Jisan-dong Tumuli, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The academic community has also highlighted this site as an important location for understanding the Daegaya earthenware production system.
Goryeong County has designated this initiative as the ‘Daegaya Production Cultural Zone Maintenance Project’ and plans to implement a phased and systematic improvement of the historical and cultural environment, including: ▲ maintenance of the Hapgari earthenware kiln site ▲ establishment of a Daegaya earthenware production experience center ▲ creation of a Daegaya earthenware culture complex promotion center ▲ improvement of the historical and cultural landscape ▲ maintenance of Gaesil Village.
The county aims to use this maintenance project to systematically improve the Daegaya ancient capital area, strengthen its identity as a historical and cultural city, and create a new hub for historical and cultural tourism.
A Goryeong County official stated, “With the designation of the Daegaya ancient capital followed by the selection for the historical and cultural zone maintenance project, our status as a representative city of Gaya history and culture has once again been recognized. We will do our utmost to ensure that the systematic maintenance of Daegaya’s historical and cultural heritage leads to the revitalization of the region.”
