On January 5, Incheon City announced that it will launch a pilot project to create "scooter-free streets" in two sections of the Hagwonga area in Songdo, Yeonsu-gu, and one section of the themed street in Bupyeong-gu, in order to prevent pedestrian safety accidents.
After conducting a demand survey with local districts and undergoing a traffic safety review by the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency, the city designated three out of seven candidate sections as electric scooter (personal mobility device) prohibited areas in December of last year.
Incheon is the second city in the country to implement local government restrictions on electric scooter operation, following Seoul, which first introduced the system nationwide in May of last year. Incheon City is currently discussing the installation of electric scooter prohibition safety signs, guidance, and enforcement measures with related agencies, and plans to begin operations as soon as preparations are complete.
A city official stated, "Scooter-free streets are a measure that prioritizes pedestrian safety above all else," adding, "Even before relevant laws and systems are revised, we will gradually manage high-risk sections first to create a safer walking environment."
