Results Needed Before June 3 Local Elections
An Essential Solution for Balanced National Development
Jeon Jinsook, a member of the National Assembly from the Democratic Party of Korea representing Gwangju Buk-gu-eul, has defined the administrative integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam as an essential task for regional survival and balanced national development, urging for swift progress and tangible results.
On January 5, Assemblywoman Jeon issued a statement, saying, "The administrative integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam is not a matter of choice, but an inevitable task of the times," and added, "In the face of the structural crisis of extreme concentration in the Seoul metropolitan area and the disappearance of local regions, the existing fragmented administrative system cannot secure the future of our region."
Assemblywoman Jeon emphasized that Gwangju and Jeonnam already function as a single living sphere. She stated, "In areas such as commuting, healthcare, education, industry, culture, and tourism, Gwangju and Jeonnam are, in effect, one living community," and pointed out, "Nevertheless, the division of administrative districts has led to repeated inefficiencies, with policies and budgets being fragmented."
She continued, "When Gwangju and Jeonnam are reorganized as a single metropolitan unit within the 'five hubs, three special zones' system, they can become an equal policy partner with the central government and lead balanced national development," and asserted, "Administrative integration is not a choice for a specific region, but a solution that enhances the sustainability of the entire Republic of Korea."
Assemblywoman Jeon also added, "Concrete results related to administrative integration must be presented before the June 3 local elections this year," and emphasized, "We must not let opportunities for future generations slip away due to political interests."
