Trump's Ambitions Resurface... Denmark Says "We Expect Respect for Our Territory"

Tensions are rising in Greenland, an island that President Donald Trump has long coveted, following the U.S. airstrike in Venezuela and the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro. According to The Asia Business Daily on January 4 (local time), citing the British daily The Guardian, "President Trump has repeatedly expressed his territorial ambitions toward Greenland, and immediately after Maduro's arrest, his core support base, the 'Make America Great Again (MAGA)' group, openly mentioned Greenland."

According to The Asia Business Daily, just hours after the U.S. elite special forces completed their military operation in Venezuela, U.S. right-wing commentator Katie Miller posted a map of Greenland with the American flag and the word "SOON" on her social media account. Miller is the wife of Stephen Miller, White House Deputy Chief of Staff and one of President Trump's closest aides. Greenland is the world's largest island, located in the Arctic Circle and is a territory of Denmark.

Denmark immediately pushed back. Jesper Moller, Denmark's ambassador to the United States, shared Miller's post on social media and stated, "We are close allies and must continue to cooperate as such," adding, "The security of the United States is also the security of Greenland and Denmark. Denmark and the United States are working together to ensure security in the Arctic region."

Ambassador Moller emphasized, "Denmark increased its defense spending last year to 13.7 billion dollars (about 19.8 trillion won)," and added, "This budget can be used in the Arctic and North Atlantic because we take collective security seriously." He also said, "We expect full respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark."

Since his inauguration in January last year, President Trump has argued that Greenland, a location evaluated as a geopolitical stronghold with abundant mineral resources, should be incorporated as U.S. territory, and has not ruled out the use of military force. Last month, he announced the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the "Special Envoy for Greenland." At the time, Governor Landry said about his appointment, "I am honored to serve to make Greenland a part of the United States," which sparked public outrage. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen issued a joint statement, saying, "Borders and national sovereignty are based on international law," and "Even when discussing international security, it is not permissible to annex another country," expressing their opposition.

Nevertheless, on the 22nd of last month, after announcing a warship construction plan in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, President Trump was asked about Greenland and stressed, "We need Greenland not for minerals, but for national security." He reiterated, "If you look up and down the coast of Greenland, you will see Russian and Chinese ships everywhere," adding, "We need to have it."

Meanwhile, on the 3rd, the United States carried out a surprise military operation, arrested Venezuelan dictator President Maduro, and extradited him to the United States. President Trump then held a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, declaring, "President Maduro has been ousted," and added, "We will run Venezuela until a safe, proper, and wise transfer of power can take place."

He also stated, "Large American oil companies will enter Venezuela, invest billions of dollars, and restore the severely damaged oil infrastructure," adding, "These companies will start making money for the country." Regarding the possibility of U.S. ground troops being stationed to protect these companies, he said, "It may be somewhat necessary."
