On January 2, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced through a press release, "We have received a complaint regarding suspicions that Assemblyman Kim Byungki received money from former district council members," adding, "The case has been assigned to the Public Crime Investigation Unit, which is responsible for the investigation, and we plan to conduct a swift and thorough probe."
Assemblyman Kim is suspected of having received between 10 million and 20 million won from two former Dongjak District Council members ahead of the 2020 general election and then returning the money.
Lee Sujin, a former lawmaker who was also a member of the Democratic Party, stated at the end of 2023 that two individuals-former Dongjak District Mayor Lee Changwoo and a former Dongjak District Council member-submitted a petition containing these details.
On the same day in the morning, an internet user filed a complaint with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency accusing Assemblyman Kim and the former Dongjak District Council members of violating the Political Funds Act and the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act in connection with this matter.
Including this case, a total of 11 cases related to suspicions involving Assemblyman Kim are currently under investigation by the Public Crime Investigation Unit, with one additional case being investigated by the Dongjak Police Station.
