On January 2, Mokpo City, South Jeolla Province, responded proactively to concerns over icy roads caused by snowfall and subzero temperatures that began early in the morning. The city carried out overnight snow removal operations, focusing on minimizing inconvenience for residents and ensuring public safety.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, as of the morning of January 2, heavy snowfall and severe cold continued in the Mokpo area, making it difficult for snow on the roads to melt. In response, the city activated its emergency response system from dawn and urgently deployed snow removal vehicles to conduct preemptive operations.
Starting at dawn, Mokpo City mobilized six snow removal vehicles, prioritizing major arterial roads and steep slopes with heavy traffic. In addition, ten small snow removal machines were deployed to quickly clear side streets and residential areas that were difficult for larger vehicles to access.
To ensure pedestrian safety, all city employees were called in for emergency duty from 6 a.m. on January 2, and assigned to designated zones. Manual snow removal was carried out in areas with high pedestrian traffic, such as sidewalks, bus stops, and crosswalks, alongside the use of machinery.
As of the morning of January 2, most major roads had been cleared, and there were no reports of traffic congestion or inconvenience to citizens. However, with additional snowfall forecast through January 3, the city remains on high alert and is maintaining its snow removal response posture.
Mokpo City is operating a phased snow removal response system according to the amount of snowfall and weather conditions, and plans to deploy additional personnel and equipment if heavy snow continues, to ensure road safety.
A city official stated, "With the low temperatures, there is a high risk of icy roads, so we will maintain our snow removal response system to minimize inconvenience and ensure safety for citizens." The official also urged, "We ask citizens to refrain from unnecessary outings and to be especially careful of slipping accidents while walking." The official added, "Please take measures to insulate water meters and boiler pipes to prevent freezing, and actively participate in clearing snow in front of your homes and businesses."
