Yangju City Set to Solidify Its Status as the Central City of Northern Gyeonggi in 2026
Major Transformation in Livelihood, Economy, and Education Expected in the 2026 Byeongo Year
Ranked First Nationwide in Residential Competitiveness... A Miracle Achieved Together with 300,000 Citizens
Kang Suhyun, Mayor of Yangju City, expressed her ambition to solidify Yangju's position as the central city of northern Gyeonggi Province in the upcoming 2026 Byeongo Year, pledging to concentrate the city's administrative capabilities on creating a residential environment where citizens can enjoy true happiness.
In her New Year's address, Mayor Kang stated, "Despite both internal and external uncertainties last year, we achieved remarkable growth across all sectors, including transportation, industry, education, and culture."
Mayor Kang continued, "Yangju City achieved the distinction of ranking first nationwide in the 'Residential Competitiveness' category in the 2025 National Urban Competitiveness Assessment, despite facing challenging external conditions last year." She added, "This serves as an indicator that, alongside population growth, the quality of life genuinely felt by our citizens has improved."
She further highlighted, "In particular, we have laid the foundation for urban growth by establishing key infrastructure for the local economy and transportation, such as the sale of lots in the Gyeonggi Yangju Technovalley and Eunnam Industrial Complex, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Okjeong-Pocheon Metropolitan Railway, and the reopening of the Gyooe Line. Additionally, we have steadily enhanced our cultural and educational foundations, including the selection of Hoeamsa Temple Site for the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, the successful hosting of our city's signature festivals such as the Hoeamsa Royal Festival and the Ten Million Globe Amaranth Festival, the Dronebot Festival, the selection of our city as an exemplary case and leading region for the Educational Development Special Zone, and the establishment of the only integrated IB education system for elementary, middle, and high schools in northern Gyeonggi Province."
She went on to say, "These efforts to lay the groundwork for urban growth have led to a meaningful change in the form of population growth, and as a result, Yangju was selected as the 'most livable city' in the 2025 National Urban Competitiveness Assessment, ranking first among 85 cities nationwide in the residential competitiveness category." She emphasized, "All of these achievements were made possible thanks to the deep trust of Yangju's 300,000 citizens and the dedicated efforts of over 1,000 public officials."
Mayor Kang Suhyun also shared, "In the New Year of 2026, just like the passionate red horse charging toward its goal, I will listen attentively to the voices of our citizens and pursue field-oriented administration. I am determined to make this a decisive year in which Yangju rises to become not only the leading city in northern Gyeonggi Province but also the most livable city in all of Korea."
In closing, Mayor Kang added, "In the Byeongo Year, I sincerely wish for health and happiness to fill every household, and for all your aspirations to be fulfilled in the coming year."
