Determination for Reform Emphasized at North Jeolla On-Site Supreme Council
Criticism Over Inadequate Punishment of Insurrection Perpetrators
Party, Government, and Presidential Office to Support State Affairs as One Team
Jeong Cheongrae, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced on December 31, "We will ensure the passage of the Second Comprehensive Special Prosecutor Act and the Special Prosecutor Acts on Shincheonji and the Unification Church before the Lunar New Year holiday."
At the on-site Supreme Council meeting held in North Jeolla Province that day, Jeong stated, "The war against insurrection is not over yet," and pointed out, "Major perpetrators of the insurrection have still not been punished, and arrest warrants requested by the special prosecutor are being dismissed one after another." He added, "Seeing this reality, we believed it was necessary to gather the unresolved issues and proceed with a second comprehensive additional special prosecution." Regarding the special prosecutor for the Unification Church, he also said, "In the face of such unconstitutional events that violate the principle of separation of church and state, we have come to the conclusion, together with the people, that a special prosecution is necessary."
Although negotiations between the ruling and opposition parties have been disrupted due to the resignation of former Floor Leader Kim Byungki and other factors, Jeong expressed his intention to accelerate the passage of the special prosecutor bills to address the aftermath of the insurrection.
Jeong also mentioned that the bill to establish a dedicated court for insurrection cases and the amendment to the Information and Communications Network Act were approved at the Cabinet meeting the previous day, stating, "The Democratic Party will steadfastly and continuously carry out the three major reforms mandated by the people." He expressed confidence in the cooperation between the party, government, and presidential office. He said, "The Democratic Party will unwaveringly support the administration as one team and one voice, just as we have done so far, in the pursuit of insurrection resolution, livelihood reforms, normalization of the state, and enhancing the national brand value. We will ensure victory in next year's local elections."
He added, "Thanks to the efforts of the Honam Development Special Committee, North Jeolla Province has entered the era of a 10 trillion won budget for the first time next year," and declared, "Through the establishment of clusters, we will nurture North Jeolla Province as a key hub for artificial intelligence (AI), bio-life sciences, and space convergence."
