From Next Year, "National Climate Crisis Response Committee" to Serve as the Central Climate Crisis Control Tower

The Presidential Commission on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth 2050 will be renamed the National Climate Crisis Response Committee (Climate Committee) starting January 1 next year.

The Climate Committee is a joint public-private deliberative and decision-making body that reviews major policies and plans for national climate crisis response and carbon neutrality implementation, and inspects and evaluates their execution.

This name change follows the amendment to the Framework Act on Carbon Neutrality, which passed the National Assembly plenary session on October 26. While the previous Carbon Neutrality Committee focused mainly on economic aspects such as greenhouse gas reduction and fostering green industries, the new name reflects the seriousness of the current climate crisis and clarifies the national responsibility to not only achieve carbon neutrality but also to anticipate climate change and respond to climate disasters, according to the Office for Government Policy Coordination.

Kim Yongsoo, Secretary General of the Climate Committee, stated, "In addition to this name change, we are pursuing a reorganization of the committee to establish a public participation decision-making system, such as operating a Climate Citizens' Assembly, and to strengthen functions for policy coordination and implementation monitoring. We expect the Climate Committee to play a central role as the nation's true control tower for responding to the climate crisis in the future."
