Dongbu Construction Selected as Eligible Contractor for Gunsan Port Dredged Soil Disposal Site Design... Project Worth 262.7 Billion Won

Selected as Eligible Contractor for Section 2 Detailed Design
Lead Contractor for 262.7 Billion Won Project

Dongbu Construction announced on December 31 that it has been selected as the eligible contractor for the detailed design of the “Construction Section 2 at Gunsan Port Second Dredged Soil Disposal Site,” which was commissioned by the Gunsan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries through a turnkey (design and build) bidding process.

This project is a large-scale port infrastructure development, which involves constructing a 2.12 km outer revetment and one set of auxiliary facilities at the offshore area in front of the western breakwater at the Gunsan District of the National Industrial Complex in Gunsan, North Jeolla Special Self-Governing Province. The total construction cost is 262.7 billion won, with Dongbu Construction serving as the lead contractor. The construction period is 48 months from the commencement date.

The project was initiated to stably manage the large volume of dredged soil generated during channel and maintenance dredging at Gunsan Port and Janghang Port. Although these two ports are core logistics and industrial hubs in the West Sea region, handling approximately 20 million tons of cargo annually, they have faced structural limitations due to the repeated accumulation of sediment in channels and berthing areas, a result of their geographic location at the mouth of the Geum River.

Once the construction is completed, the conditions for handling dredged soil are expected to improve, creating a safer environment for vessels entering and leaving the ports. This is anticipated to enhance port operation efficiency, strengthen logistics competitiveness in the West Sea region, and make a tangible contribution to revitalizing the local economy.

Dongbu Construction cited its accumulated construction experience in port and coastal structures, as well as dredging and disposal site projects, as a key factor in securing the contract. Earlier this month, Dongbu Construction also won contracts for the port automation testbed (Gwangyang Port) infrastructure project and the second phase (general cargo wharf) development project at Juwai Port.

A representative from Dongbu Construction stated, “Through consecutive port construction contracts this year, we have demonstrated our technical expertise and project management capabilities, which have been accumulated across all areas of port development, from dredging and disposal sites to wharf construction. Moving forward, we will continue to strengthen our competitiveness and expand our key role in enhancing the competitiveness of the national logistics infrastructure.”
