Six Candidates to Compete for Gwangju Mayoral Nomination
District Head Candidate Lineup Also Announced
With the June 3 local elections approaching next year, the People Power Party Gwangju Branch has revealed its list of prospective candidates for the Gwangju mayoral and five district head elections, officially launching its election preparations.
According to political circles and other sources on December 31, the People Power Party Gwangju Branch announced its prospective candidates for the Gwangju mayoral and district head elections the previous day. For the Gwangju mayoral race, six candidates are expected to compete in the party primary: Kang Hyungu, head of the Gwangju Dongnam-gap Party Association; Kim Yun, head of the Gwangju Seo-gu-eul Party Association; Kim Junghyun, head of the Gwangju Gwangsan-gap Party Association; Ahn Taeuk, head of the Gwangju Branch; Lee Junghyun, former National Assembly member; and Ha Heonsik, head of the Gwangju Seo-gu-gap Party Association.
In particular, attention is focused both inside and outside the party as former National Assembly member Lee Junghyun, who previously served as party leader during the Saenuri Party era, has decided to run as an internal candidate for Gwangju mayor.
For the five district head elections, Kim Yongim is preparing to run for Dong-gu, Cho Youngtak for Nam-gu, Kim Sunok for Buk-gu, Kim Yun for Seo-gu, and Lim Beomseop for Gwangsan-gu.
The People Power Party Gwangju Branch plans to announce its local pledges for Gwangju after holding a core party member debate in January next year and coordinating with the prospective candidates.
Ahn Taeuk, head of the Gwangju Branch, stated, "This is an important election to break the Democratic Party's monopolistic political structure and for the People Power Party to be chosen as an alternative in Gwangju," adding, "We will field candidates in all constituencies with the goal of electing at least one person per district."
