On December 31, Gyeonggi Province announced that a total of 13 sites, including Chowol in Gwangju, were selected for the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s “2026 Comprehensive Maintenance Project for Flood and Storm Disaster-Prone Living Zones and Improvement of Natural Disaster Risk Areas” and “Steep Slope Collapse Risk Maintenance Project.”

The comprehensive maintenance project for flood and storm disaster-prone living zones targets areas that have suffered large-scale damage from flooding, collapses, and erosion due to increasingly frequent extreme weather events. It is a comprehensive maintenance plan and project at the living zone level.

Four new locations-Chowol in Gwangju, Hwanggye in Hwaseong, Gwansan in Goyang, and Sineup in Pocheon-have been newly selected. Together with six ongoing project areas, a total of 26.8 billion won in national funding will be invested to comprehensively maintain drainage pumping stations, rivers, stormwater pipelines, and steep slopes.

The improvement project for natural disaster risk areas, which has secured 34.6 billion won in national funding, will focus on single maintenance projects such as installing drainage pumping stations, retention basins, and river disaster prevention. Five sites-Wangsangaldam in Yongin, Doshin-ri in Yeoncheon, Seonyu 3 in Paju, Punggye in Icheon, and Dogidong 2 in Anseong-have been selected, and together with 17 ongoing projects, maintenance will be carried out.

For the maintenance of steep slope collapse risk areas, 3.68 billion won in national funding will be invested in four new sites-Sanjang Apartment Complex in Uijeongbu, Hoedeok N1 in Gwangju, Choseong N3 and Goneung N3 in Yeoncheon-as well as two ongoing projects, to implement slope maintenance and rockfall prevention nets.

In addition, 50 million won in national funding has been secured for the ongoing disaster-risk reservoir maintenance project, which will allow for the completion of maintenance at Jangam Reservoir in Pocheon by May next year.

The disaster prevention projects selected this time will be jointly funded by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Gyeonggi Province, and the relevant cities and counties, and the maintenance projects for disaster prevention will be carried out over three to four years starting in 2026.

Gyeonggi Province maintained a close cooperative system with the relevant cities and counties throughout the process, from preparing the application for the public contest, the first document review, and the second PPT interview presentation, to the final evaluation, to ensure that the necessity of the project, the effectiveness of disaster risk mitigation, and the appropriateness of the maintenance direction were well communicated to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and private experts. The province also submitted a separate proposal to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to justify the inclusion of four projects, making multifaceted efforts for final selection. In particular, after the government’s draft in September, the province submitted proposals at meetings with local National Assembly members, and through continuous efforts, an additional 1.7 billion won in national funding was included in the final government budget in December.

Lee Jongdon, Director of Safety Management at Gyeonggi Province, said, "We will strive to ensure that Gyeonggi Province’s projects are increasingly included in public contest projects in line with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s policy direction. Through active cooperation and communication with the selected cities and counties, we will complete the construction within the planned period so that local residents can lead safe lives, protected from floods and storms."
