European and Canadian Leaders Discuss Peace Proposal in Virtual Summit
Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, announced that on the 6th of next month, leaders of the "Coalition of Will," who support Ukraine, are scheduled to meet in France.
On the 30th (local time), President Zelensky stated on X (formerly Twitter) that prior to this summit, on the 3rd, national security advisors from member countries of the "Coalition of Will" will first convene in Ukraine. Previously, President Emmanuel Macron of France announced that at the beginning of next month, countries of the Coalition of Will would gather in Paris to discuss postwar security guarantees for Ukraine. An official from the ?lys?e Palace, the office of the French president, also stated that countries supporting Ukraine hope to finalize the details of Ukraine's security guarantees within January.
Meanwhile, leaders from various European countries, Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada, and heads of the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) held a virtual meeting on this day to discuss proposals for ending the war in Ukraine. After the meeting, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz wrote on X, "We are advancing the peace process," adding, "Now, transparency and honesty are required from all parties involved, including Russia." These remarks came amid escalating tensions, as Ukraine denied Russia's claims that Ukraine had carried out a drone attack targeting the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated, "Ultimately, the prosperity of a free Ukraine depends on EU membership. That in itself is also a key security guarantee." She added that EU enlargement benefits not only the countries joining, but, as seen in previous rounds of enlargement, brings advantages to all of Europe.
Donald Tusk, Prime Minister of Poland, mentioned the meeting during his own cabinet session, saying, "Peace is visible on the horizon," but added, "However, we are still far from being 100% certain."
