Exceeding Speed Limit by 50 km/h to Result in $6300 Fine: France Takes Firm Stand Against Road Violence

Up to Three Months in Prison and a Fine of Around 600,000 Won

In France, driving at speeds exceeding the legal limit by more than 50 km/h will now be prosecuted as a criminal offense.

On December 29 (local time), the French Ministry of the Interior announced that this decree had been promulgated under the law established in July to combat road violence and introduce the new offense of road homicide.

Previously, speeding was subject to a fine and was only considered a criminal offense in the case of repeat violations. However, under the new measure, even a first offense will be treated as a crime. According to the new decree, if caught driving more than 50 km/h over the speed limit, offenders may face up to three months in prison, a fine of 3,750 euros (approximately 630,000 won), and a criminal record.

Deputy Minister Marie-Pierre Bedr?ne stated, "Exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h is not a simple violation. It is an act that deliberately endangers lives," adding, "By classifying such extreme speeding as a crime and strengthening judicial responses, we are sending a message that road violence will no longer be tolerated."

The Ministry of the Interior warned that accidents caused by driving more than 50 km/h over the speed limit can result in severe damage. It explained that driving at high speeds shortens the driver's reaction time and increases the braking distance, resulting in a greater impact in the event of a collision.

Meanwhile, the Ministry also reported that the number of speeding violations exceeding the limit by more than 50 km/h last year reached 63,217 cases, marking a 69% increase compared to 2017.
