Yongin Rises to 2nd Place Nationwide in Local Government Competitiveness, Up Two Spots

Lee Sangil: "Strengthening Yongin's Status as a Semiconductor City... Aiming to Enhance Quality of Life for Residents"

Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province has ranked 2nd in local government competitiveness among 226 cities, counties, and districts nationwide. This is an improvement of two places compared to last year.

On December 30, Yongin City announced that it achieved 2nd place in the overall competitiveness category in the "2025 Korea Local Autonomy Competitiveness Index (KLCI) Evaluation."

This index is compiled annually by the Korea Institute of Public Autonomy, which comprehensively analyzes official statistical yearbooks of local governments and data from government ministries and public institutions for all 226 cities, counties, and districts nationwide to quantify the competitiveness of each region.

In this year's evaluation, Yongin City scored 663.1 points out of a possible 1,000 in the overall competitiveness category, which combines three areas: management resources, management activities, and management performance. This score significantly exceeds the average of 529.1 points for the 75 cities nationwide.

By category, Yongin ranked 4th among the 75 cities nationwide in "management resources," which assesses basic urban capabilities such as human resources, metropolitan transportation, cultural spaces, and industrial infrastructure, with a score of 239.3 points.

In the "management activities" category, which evaluates public administration, local finance, and living environment, Yongin ranked 7th with 175.1 points. In the "management performance" category, which assesses economic vitality, population growth, and public safety, the city ranked 8th with 248.7 points.

The city explained that it received high marks in this evaluation due to the significant boost in urban competitiveness resulting from the influx of global materials, parts, and equipment companies and specialized talent, following the creation of the world’s largest semiconductor ecosystem. Notably, as of September this year, the city’s population surpassed that of Ulsan Metropolitan City.

Additionally, the expansion of transportation infrastructure, such as the opening of the North Yongin Interchange and the inclusion of the Dongbaek-Sinbong Line and Yongin Line extensions in the "2nd Gyeonggi Province Urban Rail Network Construction Plan," also contributed to the city’s higher ranking.

Lee Sangil, Mayor of Yongin, stated, "With major semiconductor anchor companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, as well as related companies, continuing to move in, the city's competitiveness will be further strengthened. At the same time, we will faithfully fulfill our role as a semiconductor city and strive to make Yongin a distinguished city that enhances the quality of life for residents in areas such as education, culture, sports, and leisure."
