Sungmin Choi, Professor at KAIST
The Korean Nuclear Society announced that, as of January 1, 2026, Sungmin Choi, Professor in the Department of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering at KAIST, will assume office as the 38th president of the society.
Professor Sungmin Choi, the new president, earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in Nuclear Engineering from Seoul National University, and his master's and doctoral degrees from MIT in the United States. After serving as a visiting researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the United States, he is currently a professor in the Department of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering at KAIST.
Professor Choi has previously served as chairman of the board of the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety, president of the Asia-Oceania Neutron Scattering Association, president of the Korea Neutron Beam Users Association, director of the Advanced Nuclear Technology Research Center, and director of the Nuclear Basic Research Institute.
Within the Korean Nuclear Society, he has served as a member of the Awards and Scholarship Committee, executive director of general affairs, executive editor, vice president, and chair of the Communications Committee. Over the past year, he has served as the 37th senior vice president and chair of the Nuclear Issues Committee.
Professor Choi stated, "Nuclear power is a core national asset that can simultaneously meet the surging electricity demand in the AI era, the goal of carbon neutrality, and national energy security. As a responsible body of experts, the society will propose future energy solutions based on scientific facts and objective data, and will do its utmost to enhance public trust through active communication."
Meanwhile, at the 101st Council Meeting held on September 12, Moon Juhyun, Professor in the Department of Energy Engineering at Dankook University, was elected as the 38th senior vice president and the 39th president of the society.
