Jeong Cheongrae: "New Floor Leader to Be Elected Quickly... Hope Kim Byungki Moves Forward Well"

"Emergency Supreme Council Meeting Scheduled for 1 p.m. on the 30th"

With Kim Byungki, Floor Leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, resigning from his position amid ongoing allegations, the Democratic Party leadership is planning to hold an emergency Supreme Council meeting to discuss the election of a new floor leader.

On the 30th at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Democratic Party leader Jeong Cheongrae told reporters, "We have convened an emergency Supreme Council meeting at 1 p.m. today," adding, "We will work to minimize the leadership vacuum and proceed with the process to elect a new floor leader as quickly as possible."

Jeong stated, "Kim Byungki has worked very hard, dealing with the People Power Party, which has been difficult to communicate with, as well as addressing the remnants of the rebellion and pursuing reform legislation. Watching his resignation press conference today, I could tell he must have suffered a lot emotionally during this time."

He continued, "I hope Kim Byungki will be able to recover and move forward. Just as a river does not give up on reaching the sea, our steps toward clearing the remnants of the rebellion, enacting reform and livelihood legislation, and ensuring the success of the Lee Jaemyung administration will not stop. The Lee Jaemyung administration and the Democratic Party will continue to move forward."

Meanwhile, when asked by reporters about a report the previous day that Democratic Party lawmaker Kang Sunwoo had discussed countermeasures with then-floor leader Kim Byungki regarding the receipt of money by a Seoul city council candidate during the 8th local elections in 2022, Jeong Cheongrae remained silent and did not respond.

With Kim Byungki's resignation, it appears that Moon Jinseok, Senior Deputy Floor Leader, will serve as acting floor leader. According to the party's constitution and regulations, if the floor leader is unable to perform his duties or until a new floor leader is elected, the senior deputy floor leader acts in his place. In the event of a vacancy, a new floor leader must be elected at a general assembly of lawmakers within one month.
