According to the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) on December 29 (local time), two massive lava flows erupted from the northeastern crater of Mount Etna on December 27.

The lava began to erupt around 10 a.m. on the 27th, reaching heights of 100 to 150 meters, while volcanic ash and smoke soared up to 8 kilometers above sea level.

The eruption appeared to subside but then intensified again around 3 p.m. Lava shot up to heights of 400 to 500 meters, and the column of smoke and volcanic ash reached 10 kilometers. According to INGV, this second intense lava eruption lasted about 45 minutes. INGV assessed that this eruption was the most intense in 28 years.
