Names of 255 Busan National University Alumni War Veterans Engraved
The names of alumni who went to the battlefield before entering the classroom have finally returned to campus.
On December 29, Busan National University and the Busan Regional Office of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs held an unveiling ceremony for the "Busan National University Alumni 6.25 War Veterans Memorial" in front of the university's Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) building.
The ceremony began with the national pledge, followed by the introduction of distinguished guests, a commemorative speech by the university president, congratulatory remarks, and a joint unveiling performance of the memorial by the attendees.

The event was attended by Choi Jaewon, President of Busan National University; Kwon Oeul, Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (with the Director-General for Veterans Culture and Policy reading his remarks); Yoon Ilhyun, Mayor of Geumjeong District; Seo Youngcheol, President of the Busan National University Alumni Association in Seoul; Kim Seongbeom, Senior Vice President of the ROTC Alumni Association; Choi Suin, President of the Student Council and Vice President of the Student Council; and the incoming Student Council President, among others.
In particular, Busan National University alumni and 6.25 War veterans Lee Jonggeun, Kim Jeongjin, Park Seongsun, and Hyun Gisung attended in person, adding significance to the event. Heo Kyung, Head of the Busan Branch of the War Veterans Association, was also present, symbolically highlighting the bond between the generation of veterans and the university.
Previously, in September of last year, Busan National University and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs signed a work agreement to build the memorial on campus, aiming to remember and express gratitude for the sacrifice and dedication of alumni who served in the 6.25 War. The two institutions identified a total of 255 alumni veterans and, in January of this year, considered the museum and Saebyeokdeul area as candidate sites for the memorial.
However, due to the need for historical verification of the list and internal discussions about the memorial's location, the university administration decided to adjust the site to the area around the ROTC building, leading to the current unveiling ceremony.
The memorial was constructed with dimensions of 6.4 meters in width, 2.7 meters in length, and 3.4 meters in height. The final list of names was confirmed through a thorough comparison and verification of the alumni register for those born between 1920 and 1940 and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs’ register of 6.25 War veterans. The names were engraved in order of admission year.
Through this memorial, Busan National University aims to remember each of the 255 alumni who served in the war and plans to continue identifying and commemorating those who have not yet been recorded, ensuring their legacy is preserved in history.
