194 Billion Won Invested
Multipurpose Gymnasium to Be Constructed
On December 29, Hwasun County in South Jeolla Province was finally selected for the ‘2026 Community-Based (Disability-Friendly) National Sports Center Project’ hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and will begin full-scale construction of a multipurpose gymnasium that can be used by both people with disabilities and those without.
According to the county, the multipurpose gymnasium will be built with a total project cost of 19.4 billion won, and will include facilities such as a swimming pool and a fitness room. Currently, administrative procedures and detailed design are underway. With this project selection, the county has secured 5 billion won in national funding, significantly reducing the financial burden on the county and giving strong momentum to the project.
The gymnasium will serve as a community-based sports facility accessible to all local residents, including swimming and daily sports programs for people with disabilities. Through this, the county expects to improve accessibility to sports for people with disabilities and to contribute to the creation of an inclusive sports environment for everyone.
Lee Maengwoo, Director of the County Facility Management Office, stated, “This selection is the result of thorough preparation and a project plan that reflects local conditions, which received positive evaluations. Securing national funding not only reduces the county’s financial burden, but also makes it very meaningful to build sports infrastructure that can be enjoyed by both people with and without disabilities.”
Meanwhile, the county plans to proceed step by step, from design to the establishment of an operational plan, to ensure that the multipurpose gymnasium will be developed as a hub facility for community sports in connection with the Hanioum Culture Sports Center.
