Two Additional National Projects Including R&D Added to the Existing Ten Initiatives
From Localization of Materials and Components to Design and Prototype Development of Medical Semiconductors
On December 29, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province announced that it has consecutively secured new national government-funded projects for the promotion of the semiconductor industry, completing a total investment lineup worth 300 billion KRW.
This achievement goes beyond simply securing a budget; it marks a significant turning point for Gangwon Province as it aims to become a practical hub for future industries, encompassing the localization of semiconductor materials and components as well as the design and prototype development of medical semiconductors.
The province has added two new national government-funded projects worth 68 billion KRW, including R&D for 2026, to its existing 10 ongoing projects (worth 232 billion KRW). With this, a total of 12 advanced projects will receive large-scale investment amounting to 300 billion KRW, providing strong momentum for the growth of the semiconductor industry.
In particular, the two newly secured projects are expected to serve as key drivers for the qualitative growth of Gangwon's semiconductor industry. By securing national funding, the province not only ensures stable project implementation but also strengthens its role as a leading base for the semiconductor sector.
First, the “Advanced Ceramic Materials, Components, and Process Innovation Technology Development for Semiconductors” project will receive a total investment of 40 billion KRW. The province has secured an initial 3.2 billion KRW in national funding for 2026, aiming to achieve technological independence in materials and components, which are essential for next-generation semiconductor manufacturing. Through this initiative, Gangwon plans to accelerate the localization of fields that have been highly dependent on overseas sources and secure sovereignty over the domestic supply chain.
Next, the “Establishment of a Medical Semiconductor Demonstration Platform” project will be promoted with a total investment of 28 billion KRW. Starting with 1 billion KRW in national funding for 2026, this project targets the rapidly increasing healthcare demand in an aging society. Leveraging the province's semiconductor industry infrastructure, Gangwon plans to create an innovative platform supporting the entire process-from the design to demonstration-of medical and healthcare-specialized semiconductors, which are regional specialty industries.
