Gangwon Secures 30.2 Billion Won in National AI Funding
Leaping Toward a Global City for Future Industries Centered on AI
Accelerating Industrial Transformation in Healthcare and Manufacturing
Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Jin-tae) announced on December 29 that, for the first time in the province’s history, it has entered the era of 10 trillion won in national funding. In the field of AI industry, the province has secured 11 projects and 30.2 billion won in national funding, thereby accelerating the development of future industries.
With this budget allocation, AI projects with a total project cost of 260.5 billion won will be promoted. In particular, five new projects (with 15.5 billion won in national funding) have been included, significantly strengthening the province’s ability to implement AI-based industrial transformation.
Based on this, the province plans to actively expand the application of AI technology across key regional industries such as healthcare and manufacturing.
By sector, 19.6 billion won in national funding has been secured for the digital healthcare sector.
This achievement is the result of ongoing efforts to integrate AI with precision medical big data and medical infrastructure established by the province. It is expected to lead to more advanced services through the demonstration of medical AI in the future.
In addition, 9.2 billion won in new national funding has been secured to apply AI to the manufacturing industry, which forms the foundation of the region’s economy.
Through this, the province plans to introduce AI technology into the production processes of small and medium-sized manufacturers, enhance manufacturing competitiveness and productivity, and actively drive structural improvements across the industry.
Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province is also accelerating the establishment of a “Gangwon-style AI industrial ecosystem.”
The province is building a connected structure that links AI technology development, demonstration, commercialization, and dissemination in line with the characteristics of local industries. Based on this, it will continue to plan and prepare for expansion into large-scale national AI projects in the future.
Kwangrae Kim, Vice Governor for Economic Affairs of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, stated, “The core of Gangwon’s AI strategy is to first apply AI to Gangwon’s specialized industries and then expand it across all industries. With the securing of this national funding, we will further strengthen our ability to transform Gangwon into a ‘global city for future industries.’”
