Uijeongbu City Urges Caution Against Voice Phishing by Impersonators of City Officials

Uijeongbu City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Donggeun) has recently urged local businesses and residents to exercise extra caution, warning of a series of voice phishing and other scam attempts involving individuals impersonating city hall employees.

In fact, there was a recent case where a local business narrowly avoided falling victim to a scam after receiving a call claiming that a city official had ordered moving services. The business visited city hall to verify the request and thus avoided the fraud.

The voice phishing criminals typically approach local contractors, sending forged official documents or business cards via text message to gain their trust. They then demand payments for goods or contract deposits, using these tactics to extort money.

A city official stated, "City officials never directly request payments for goods or other fees. If you receive a suspicious contact, you must confirm the facts with the relevant department and report it to the police." The official also asked, "Please widely share this information within the industry to prevent similar incidents from occurring."
