The site development project for Gadeokdo New Airport has officially commenced.
On December 29, the Gadeokdo New Airport Construction Corporation (Chairman Lee Yoonsang) announced that it had issued a tender notice for the 'Gadeokdo New Airport Site Development Project' through the Public Procurement Service.
The site development project will be carried out as a design-build turnkey contract, with the construction period set at 106 months, up from the original 84 months. The project cost has been set at approximately 10.7 trillion won, reflecting price increases from the initial estimate of 10.5 trillion won.
To encourage broader participation and ensure competitive bidding, the corporation has limited the number of top 10 construction companies (by construction capability evaluation) that can form a joint venture to a maximum of three. Additionally, up to 20 local companies can join as additional members of the joint venture, in accordance with the 'Gadeokdo New Airport Construction Project Local Company Preferential Standards (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Notice No. 2024-226)'.
Companies wishing to participate in the site development project tender must submit a pre-qualification (PQ) application by January 16, 2026. For those that pass the review, a site briefing will be held on January 29. Afterward, a six-month period will be allocated for the preparation of the basic design documents (priority construction implementation design). Following design review and bid price evaluation, the final contractor for the implementation design is expected to be selected around August 2026.
Park Seongchul, Head of Construction at the corporation, stated, "With the prompt announcement of the tender, we have established a turning point for the project. We will diligently carry out the subsequent procedures to put the project on track and focus our efforts on building a safe and high-quality airport."
Kwon Hyukjae, Director of the Facility Business Bureau at the Public Procurement Service, emphasized, "The Gadeokdo New Airport site development project is crucial for balanced national development and revitalizing the local economy. We hope to see active participation from capable construction companies, and we will ensure that contract work proceeds swiftly so that the new airport construction can move forward without delays."
