Archbishop of Seoul Delivers New Year's Message: "We Must Practice Love and Peace in a Mature Democracy"

Archbishop Chung Soon-taek, head of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul, delivered a New Year's message for 2026, expressing gratitude for the responsible participation of the people who have achieved a mature democracy, and emphasizing that the Church must practice love and peace on its synodal journey.

Archbishop Chung stated, "Over the past year, we overcame great turmoil and, in the process of establishing a new government, demonstrated to the world a model of mature democracy that drew global admiration." He added, "I pray that the new government will move toward sustainable development and a harmonious society."


He also emphasized that "the Church is a community that reflects the light of Christ," and said, "Through the synodal journey the Church has taken over the past few years, its mission has become clear." He continued, "Especially now, with just one year left until the 2027 Seoul World Youth Day, we must ensure that this journey becomes not just an event for some young people, but a nationwide celebration for all generations and everyone."


Finally, he said, "When we practice love and peace on the synodal journey, the salvation of Christ will be witnessed and revealed even more vividly in our daily lives and in the world." He concluded, "I pray that the grace and peace of the Lord will fill you and your families throughout 2026."
