People Power Party Urges Kim Byungki to Step Down as Floor Leader Without Delay

"None of the Favoritism Allegations Are Minor"

The People Power Party on December 28 called for the resignation of Kim Byung-ki, Floor Leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, who is facing allegations of private misconduct.

Chief Spokesperson Choi Boyoon stated in a commentary that day, "Insisting on remaining in office amid a series of serious allegations of power-related favoritism is in direct contradiction to the public's common sense," adding, "Floor Leader Kim should not delay any further but immediately step down and take responsibility before the public."

Chief Spokesperson Choi also said, "The suspicions surrounding Kim, including the alleged free use of Korean Air hotel vouchers during his time as a member of the National Assembly's Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee, a luncheon with the head of a company subject to parliamentary inspection ahead of the audit, alleged preferential medical treatment at a local hospital during a period of medical service gaps, and a range of Korean Air-related favoritism allegations involving his spouse, daughter-in-law, and even grandchildren, are all serious and cannot be taken lightly."

She continued, "There have even been revelations that Floor Leader Kim directly asked his aides to 'help his son' with intelligence-related work at the National Intelligence Service, and that he attempted to confirm the schedules of visiting foreign leaders and major corporations through his parliamentary office," emphasizing, "This is a clear pattern of power-related favoritism."

Choi Sujin, Senior Deputy Floor Spokesperson, also issued a statement that day, urging, "Floor Leader Kim must honestly explain all allegations to the public and take responsibility for them," and called for him to clarify his position. She further criticized, "Whenever major scandals arise, such as the abuse of staff allegations involving Assemblywoman Kang Sunwoo, sexual harassment allegations against Assemblyman Jang Kyungtae, and controversy over congratulatory money from an audited institution involving Assemblywoman Choi Minhee, the Democratic Party has consistently chosen to endure rather than address the issues," and questioned, "Is this the fairness and justice the Democratic Party has claimed to uphold? The party must take responsible action against problematic lawmakers."
