Just one day before the peace talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russia launched a massive airstrike targeting Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. This is being interpreted as Russia’s typical "politics of fear" and a show of force to gain an upper hand at the negotiating table.

According to major foreign media outlets on the 27th (local time), huge explosions reverberated throughout various parts of downtown Kyiv early in the morning. Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, immediately issued an emergency evacuation order, and the Ukrainian Air Force declared a nationwide air raid alert, stating that drone and missile attacks were raining down on the northeast, south, and Kyiv itself. As a result of this attack, emergency power outages were implemented in the left-bank area of Kyiv, and at least eight people were injured.

The impact of this airstrike extended beyond the border into Poland. Due to the attacks on Ukraine’s western border region, Poland’s Rzeszow and Lublin airports were temporarily closed, and the Polish military scrambled fighter jets, pushing tensions on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) front to their highest level.

At the Trump-Zelensky summit to be held in the United States on the 28th, a "peace plan" to end the war is scheduled to be discussed. Ukraine has stated that a draft of the peace proposal is 90% complete and is seeking a prompt cessation of hostilities, but Russia is demanding the cession of the Donbas region and the complete withdrawal of Ukrainian forces as strict preconditions.

Ultimately, analysts believe that Russia’s calculated devastation of Kyiv’s energy infrastructure and metropolitan area on the eve of negotiations is a high-level provocation aimed at breaking Ukraine’s will to resist and pressuring it to give up territory.
