The Democratic Party on December 27 strongly criticized former President Yoon Seokyeol for asserting the legitimacy of declaring martial law during the final trial for charges including obstruction of special official duties, calling it "an act of betrayal against the people."
Baek Seunga, the party's spokesperson for parliamentary affairs, stated in a written briefing, "Even in his final statement, former President Yoon shamelessly claimed that the illegal martial law was merely an 'enlightenment order, a warning,' which is a disgraceful attitude that insults the people, the Constitution, and democracy."

She also said, "This sentencing recommendation marks the beginning of judicial judgment to restore collapsed democracy and constitutional order, and serves as a signal flare for punishing the forces of insurrection," urging the judiciary to conduct a swift trial and to strictly punish those involved in the rebellion.
Previously, Special Prosecutor Cho Eunseok's team for insurrection cases requested a 10-year prison sentence for former President Yoon at the previous day's trial, citing his alleged obstruction of arrest during the 12·3 Martial Law period.
In his final statement, former President Yoon completely denied the charges, claiming that the declaration of martial law was "because of the legislative dictatorship of the major opposition party."
