The special prosecutor team led by Min Jungki indicted former President Yoon Sukyeol on December 26 on charges of making false statements under the Public Official Election Act.
On this day, the special prosecutor's team announced through a press release that former President Yoon had been indicted for violating the Public Official Election Act by publicly making false statements about former Yongsan Tax Office Chief Yoon Woojin and Mr. Jeon during debates and other events between December 2021 and January 2022, when he was the presidential candidate for the People Power Party.
At the time, former President Yoon faced allegations that, while serving as Chief of the First Investigation Division at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office in 2012, he became involved in the case of former Chief Yoon by introducing him to a lawyer who had previously worked at the Central Investigation Department.
The special prosecutor's team determined that former President Yoon did, in fact, introduce a lawyer, but, concerned about a potential drop in approval ratings, falsely stated at the Kwanhun Club debate on December 14, 2021, "I did not introduce a lawyer," which constitutes making a false statement.
Additionally, at an interview during the launch ceremony of the Buddhist Leaders Forum on January 17, 2022, former President Yoon said, "I was introduced to Mr. Jeon by a party official, and I have never met him together with Mrs. Kim," but the special prosecutor's team concluded that this was also a false statement. They cited that Yoon had, in fact, been introduced to Mr. Jeon by Mrs. Kim and that all three had met together.
This is the eighth time former President Yoon has been indicted since the December 3 Martial Law Incident.
