Full-Scale University Innovation Based on AI
Expanding Industry-Academia-Research Collaboration in Shipbuilding, Healthcare, and Materials
Pusan National University (PNU) has declared the "PNU-AX Major Transformation Strategy," aiming to expand the roles and responsibilities of national universities in the era of artificial intelligence, and is embarking on a full-scale initiative to implement AI-based innovation in research, education, and industry-academia collaboration.
Pusan National University, led by President Choi Jaewon, will host the "PNU-AX Major Transformation Strategy" declaration ceremony and the opening ceremony of the "Jang Youngsil AI Convergence Research Institute" at the newly opened on-campus IT Building at 4 p.m. on December 30.
This event is designed to present a standard model for university AI transformation (AX) based on the public nature and responsibilities of national universities in a rapidly changing AI environment, with the goal of generating tangible outcomes in connection with the local community, industry, and society.
Busan Mayor Park Hyungjoon and Kim Youngsik, Chairman of the National Research Council of Science & Technology, are scheduled to deliver congratulatory remarks, while Kim Sungsoo, Director General for R&D Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, will give a keynote lecture on the topic of "National Science and Technology × AI Strategy."
From Pusan National University, Park Sanghoo, Vice President for External Affairs and Strategy, will present the university's mid- to long-term "AX Major Transformation Strategy (A.U.R.A 2.0)" under the vision of "PNU Core AXIS at the Center of the AI Era." Following this, Song Giltae, Director of the Jang Youngsil AI Convergence Research Institute, will introduce the institute's establishment process and future operational plans.
The Jang Youngsil AI Convergence Research Institute, which opens on this day, will serve as PNU's core hub for AI-based research and demonstration, acting as a convergence research platform that connects fundamental AI technologies with solutions to industrial and societal challenges. The institute plans to focus on: ▲ research on core AI technologies; ▲ industry and public problem-solving projects; ▲ joint research and talent cultivation among academia, industry, and research institutes; and ▲ building regional and global collaborative networks.
In conjunction with the opening ceremony, three industry-academia-research agreements will be signed in the fields of shipbuilding, healthcare, and materials. Pusan National University will sign a business agreement with Samsung Heavy Industries for joint AI research and establish the "Samsung Heavy Industries AI Research Collaboration Center" on campus. This center will function as a joint research and demonstration space utilizing real-world industrial data and will promote a problem-solving R&D model that combines the university's fundamental AI technologies with the field experience of a major corporation.
Additionally, in cooperation with local medical institution Eunsung Medical Foundation, the university will jointly establish the "Good Hospitals AX Healthcare Center" to foster an AI-based healthcare innovation ecosystem. Alongside this, a business agreement will be signed with the Korea Institute of Materials Science to establish a research collaboration center, aiming to link and expand research outcomes and implement national AI R&D policies in practice. These project research centers will invest joint budgets to carry out ongoing AI-based collaborative research.
Pusan National University President Choi Jaewon stated, "The launch of the PNU-AX Major Transformation Strategy and the Jang Youngsil AI Convergence Research Institute marks the starting point of a structural transformation that not only drives university innovation based on AI but also connects national policies, regional strategies, and industrial demands around the university." He added, "Pusan National University will emerge as a leading example of implementing the national university hub development strategy in practice through a policy cooperation axis linking major corporations, local medical institutions, and government-funded research institutes." He further emphasized, "As a research-oriented national university representing the southeastern region, we will strengthen our role as a national hub for AI and integrated industry-academia-research collaboration."
