'Sportscation' Project Selected as an Outstanding Case in Responding to Population Decline

Samcheok City in Gangwon Province was selected as an excellent city along with two other cities and counties in the province in the '2025 Population Decline Response Best Practices Evaluation' hosted by Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province.

Samcheok City has been selected as an excellent city along with two other cities and counties in the province in the '2025 Population Decline Response Best Practices Evaluation' hosted by Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province and has received an Excellence Award. Provided by Samcheok City

This Population Decline Response Best Practices Evaluation was conducted in three categories: 18 cities and counties in the province, departments of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, and policy proposals by public officials. In the city and county category, the evaluation focused on identifying outstanding cases among the population decline and local extinction response policies implemented by each city and county this year.

Samcheok City received high marks for its efforts to increase the resident population and revitalize the city by establishing a model that combines sports, vacation, education, and convention. Key initiatives included major tourist site tours linked with the national 3x3 basketball tournament, youth career camps using sports as a medium, and presenting population decline crisis response strategies through the Sportscation Conference.

A city official stated, "We will continue to discover and implement regional vitality population policies that go beyond simply attracting visitors to fostering ongoing relationships with the region, converting them into relational population, and ultimately revitalizing the local economy to overcome the population decline crisis."
