Gijang County in Busan Achieves First Success in Independent Kelp Seedling Production... On-Site Distribution to 26 Farms

380 Units of Region-Specific Seedlings Supplied
Improved Stability and Competitiveness Expected for Aquaculture

Gijang County (Governor Jeong Jongbok) has completed on-site distribution of 380 units of kelp seedlings, produced independently, to 26 local seaweed farming households.

The kelp seedlings distributed this time were produced directly by the county’s Fisheries Resources Research Center. Starting in September, the center secured high-quality mother kelp from Incheon and began seedling collection.

After indoor cultivation and management at the center’s seedling cultivation facility until mid-November, the seedlings were transplanted for about a month at the research and training sea area. As a result, the seedlings successfully grew into young blades approximately 1 cm in length.

Until now, kelp farming in the Gijang region has relied on purchasing seedlings produced in other areas with lower water temperatures. With this research achievement, the foundation has been established for independently producing kelp seedlings suitable for the characteristics of Gijang’s waters, raising expectations for stable seedling supply and improved productivity.

The county distributed the kelp seedlings produced this time to each fishing village association and plans to continuously monitor the growth and stability of the seedlings produced in Gijang waters through on-site monitoring in the future.

Governor Jeong Jongbok stated, "We will continue to promote research and development of land-based kelp seedling production technology to proactively respond to changing marine environments," adding, "By further advancing seedling production technology optimized for Gijang waters, we will enhance the competitiveness of the local seaweed aquaculture industry."
