Lee Gaeho Urges South Jeolla to Act to Save Medical School Opportunity: "Provincial Government Must Prepare Countermeasures"

Merger of Suncheon National University and Mokpo National University Rejected
"A Passive, Hands-Off Approach Left to Universities Alone Is Unacceptable"

Lee Gaeho Urges South Jeolla to Act to Save Medical School Opportunity: "Provincial Government Must Prepare Countermeasures" Lee Gaeho, Member of the National Assembly.

Lee Gaeho, a National Assembly member from the Democratic Party of Korea representing Damyang, Hampyeong, Yeonggwang, and Jangseong, has strongly urged the South Jeolla Provincial Government to take immediate action following the rejection of the merger between Suncheon National University and Mokpo National University through a student vote.

On December 24, Assemblyman Lee issued a statement expressing deep concern, saying, "The university merger, which was a prerequisite for establishing a national medical school in South Jeolla Province, is now at risk of falling through."

In particular, he stated, "As a member of the National Assembly's Health and Welfare Committee who has championed the establishment of a medical school in South Jeolla more than anyone else, I feel a profound sense of concern and heavy responsibility," expressing regret over the reality that a long-cherished goal of the past 30 years is now in jeopardy.

While emphasizing the need to respect the outcome of the student vote, Assemblyman Lee pointed out, "The real issue does not lie in the students' choice, but rather in the process that failed to win their support."

He further remarked, "We must soberly reflect on whether we failed to properly demonstrate the tangible benefits and future prospects for South Jeolla that integration would bring, instead leaving the matter solely to university authorities and maintaining a passive, bystander attitude."

He then defined the establishment of a medical school in South Jeolla as a matter of residents' right to life and the last bastion for reviving a region facing the risk of extinction, and strongly called on the provincial government and relevant authorities to take three specific actions.

Assemblyman Lee stressed, "The South Jeolla Provincial Government, the presidents of both universities, and other stakeholders must quickly devise effective follow-up measures through close consultation," adding, "These meetings must not be mere formalities; a practical and concrete roadmap to overcome the current difficulties must be redrawn."

Regarding persuading university members, he urged, "Do not impose administrative procedures, but instead present a clear blueprint that demonstrates how integration will strengthen the university's competitiveness and secure students' futures, and persuade them with sincerity."

Finally, Assemblyman Lee stated, "I, too, will do everything in my power to ensure the establishment of a medical school in South Jeolla by working with the central government and the National Assembly," and urged, "South Jeolla Province must also focus all its capabilities on resolving this situation with extraordinary determination."
