Signs of Data Breach Detected During Verification of Public Interest Report
The Personal Information Protection Commission announced on the 24th that it has been investigating Shinhan Card since the 16th in connection with a personal information leak.
The commission explained that it identified signs of a data breach while verifying the facts of a public interest report related to Shinhan Card.
It was revealed that, from March 2022 to May this year, an employee at a Shinhan Card branch illegally provided card recruiters and others with the business names, merchant owners' names, and mobile phone numbers of merchants who had newly installed terminals, using this information for card issuance sales activities.
Shinhan Card has posted an apology on its website, stating that the personal information of as many as 190,000 merchant owners was leaked, and is individually notifying the affected merchants. A web page for checking whether one's information was leaked is also being operated.
A representative of the Personal Information Protection Commission stated, "Through the investigation, we will thoroughly verify the exact circumstances, scale, and types of information leaked, as well as whether there were any violations of the Personal Information Protection Act. If any violations are found, we will take action in accordance with the relevant laws," adding, "If necessary, we will also cooperate closely with financial authorities."
