The Jeollanam-do Provincial Council Special Committee for Supporting the Establishment of the National Medical School at the Integrated University (hereinafter referred to as "the Special Committee") expressed deep concern regarding the rejection of the Mokpo National University-Sunchon National University integration referendum amid opposition from members of Sunchon National University.

On December 24, the Special Committee released a statement, saying, "This university integration is not merely a matter of merging two institutions, but rather an inevitable choice to guarantee the right to healthcare for Jeonnam residents and to fundamentally improve the region's vulnerable medical infrastructure by attracting a national medical school."

The committee further emphasized, "Given that this is a historic task aimed at breaking the vicious cycle of repeated failures to attract a medical school over decades and at responding to the structural crisis of regional extinction and medical service gaps, the delay in the integration process is a matter that cannot be taken lightly when considering the future of all of Jeonnam."

The Special Committee made it clear that the decision regarding university integration is a crucial choice that directly affects not only the interests of certain members or a single group, but also the overall community and the quality of life for future generations. At the same time, it stated that concerns and considerations raised during the integration discussions-such as academic administration, campus identity, and changes to the educational environment-must be fully respected.

The committee also mentioned that these issues should be adjusted and supplemented through dialogue.

However, the Special Committee expressed deep regret that these concerns have led to practical setbacks in the plans to promote integration, including the establishment of a national medical school in Jeonnam.

The committee pointed out, "This decision is not simply a short-term judgment, but a choice directly linked to the future direction of Jeonnam," and added, "Given the weak medical infrastructure and the ongoing outflow of young people, it will not be easy for local universities to independently maintain their competitiveness and sustainability."

The Special Committee went on to say, "University integration and the establishment of a medical school represent a significant turning point that can enhance regional development, improve medical conditions, and strengthen Jeonnam's future competitiveness." The committee urged Sunchon National University to once again deeply consider its public responsibility and historical role as a regional flagship national university.

Finally, the committee stated, "Since there is still time and room to continue discussions on integration, we urge a prompt resumption of talks for the sake of the community and the future of Jeonnam."
