"Joint Action Plans with People Power Party to Be Discussed After Christmas"
Lee Junseok, leader of the Reform Party, urged the Democratic Party of Korea to promptly accept the special prosecutor bill on the Unification Church, which was jointly proposed with the People Power Party.
On December 24, after the Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly, Lee told reporters, "If the special prosecutor for the Unification Church is not processed quickly, it will only give more time for evidence to be destroyed and for people to coordinate their stories."
Lee plans to discuss ways to ensure the passage of the special prosecutor bill on the Unification Church with Jang Donghyuk, leader of the People Power Party. Lee mentioned, "Leader Jang has likely been in a recovery phase after conducting a 24-hour filibuster until yesterday, but after Christmas, it is necessary to actively discuss joint action plans."
During the previous Supreme Council meeting, Lee also urged, "If the Democratic Party truly wants a special prosecutor, they should not attach any conditions and agree to this bill before the end of the year," calling on them to relinquish their nomination rights for the special prosecutor.
The Democratic Party is rejecting the opposition’s proposal for a “third-party nomination, such as by the Supreme Court,” and is instead insisting on a plan in which one nominee is recommended by each of the ruling and opposition parties. Additionally, they argue that the investigation should exclude suspicions of concealment related to Special Prosecutor Min Jungki and the Unification Church, and instead focus on allegations involving Shincheonji.
Cheon Haram, floor leader of the Reform Party, stated, "There is no other way except a special prosecutor nominated by a third party," and added, "Democratic Party floor leader Kim Byungki should stop making empty statements like 'speed is justice' and promptly accept the Reform Party's special prosecutor bill on the Unification Church."
Park Sunghoon, chief spokesperson of the People Power Party, also commented in a statement, "Although the Democratic Party claims that 'speed is justice,' in reality, they are attaching all sorts of conditions to delay the process. This only proves their intention to either derail the special prosecutor or use it as an election tool," emphasizing, "If the Democratic Party’s acceptance of the special prosecutor is not just a 'show' to appease public anger, they must immediately cooperate in introducing a special prosecutor without any sanctuary."
