Gyeonggi Province Preemptively Activates Joint Response Team to Prepare for Sudden Cold Wave

In response to the severe cold wave forecast across Gyeonggi Province starting December 25, the provincial government will activate a joint rapid response team to prevent casualties and minimize inconvenience for residents.

Previously, the Korea Meteorological Administration indicated that a cold wave advisory may be issued for many cities and counties in the province from the night of December 24, with morning lows on December 26 expected to range from minus 16 to minus 11 degrees Celsius.

Accordingly, Gyeonggi Province will activate the joint rapid response team from the morning of December 25, operating an emergency response system involving 12 departments across 7 divisions, including overall situation management, welfare, and waterworks. In particular, the province plans to strengthen preventive measures by monitoring cold wave advisories in real time together with local governments, enhancing protection for vulnerable groups, inspecting facilities, and preventing water pipe freezing.

On December 23, Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dongyeon requested the 31 cities and counties to: strengthen welfare checks and protection activities for vulnerable groups such as the elderly living alone and the homeless; thoroughly implement measures to prevent crop damage from cold and livestock deaths; actively promote the prevention of water pipe freezing and ensure swift restoration in case of damage; and proactively publicize cold wave safety guidelines using available channels such as emergency disaster text messages and village broadcasts.

When a cold wave advisory is issued, Gyeonggi Province will immediately operate extended cold wave shelters and emergency evacuation centers, closely monitor their night and weekend operations, and intensify street counseling and patrols in areas with high concentrations of homeless people to ensure that no casualties occur due to the cold wave.
