Jeonnam Province has achieved the number one nationwide ranking for 'Low Carbon Agricultural Product Certified Area,' a goal set for the first time in 2025 to respond to the climate crisis and secure an early lead in the low-carbon agricultural product market.
According to the Korea Institute of Agricultural Technology Promotion on the 23rd, Jeonnam Province recorded 284 cases of low-carbon agricultural product certification, covering 5,664 hectares. This accounts for 33% of the total certified area nationwide, which stands at 18,935 hectares, making it the largest in the country. Compared to last year’s certified area of 1,660 hectares, this represents a 240% increase, nearly three times larger.
By region, the certified low-carbon agricultural areas are as follows: Jeonnam with 5,664 hectares, Jeonbuk with 4,560 hectares, Gyeongbuk with 3,265 hectares, and Chungbuk with 1,996 hectares, with Jeonnam ranking first nationwide. Jeonnam has achieved an annual reduction of approximately 15,397 tons of carbon emissions.
The low-carbon agricultural product certification system grants certification to agricultural and livestock products that apply agricultural technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimize environmental impact. Recently, it has garnered attention as part of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) management and climate crisis response for sustainable development. In fact, over 760 farmers participated in five low-carbon agricultural product certification training sessions held since January, reflecting strong interest among agricultural workers.
The main factors behind Jeonnam having the largest number of new certification applications nationwide include its foundation in eco-friendly agriculture, which accounts for more than 50% of the country’s certified area, and being the first in the nation to establish and implement plans to expand certification.
In particular, efforts such as encouraging group applications by complexes for eco-friendly rice, operating mobile information sessions, actively responding to on-site certification evaluations, and uniquely proposing five additional certification training sessions exclusively in Jeonnam have all contributed to these achievements.
Kim Youngseok, Director of Eco-Friendly Agriculture in Jeonnam Province, stated, "Value-driven consumption seeking green products is rapidly spreading in response to the climate crisis," and emphasized, "It is more important than ever to secure a lead in the low-carbon agricultural product market." He added, "As a leading region for carbon neutrality with the largest eco-friendly certified area nationwide, we will further expand the foundation for low-carbon agricultural product certification and actively respond to the growing market."
