The Seo-gu District Council of Gwangju announced on December 23 that the “Circular Economy Special Account,” the first of its kind among Gwangju’s autonomous districts, has been included in next year’s main budget.

This special account was newly established based on the “Ordinance on the Establishment and Operation of the Circular Economy Special Account in Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City,” which was proposed by Assemblyman Jeon Seungil (Chairman of the Seo-gu District Council) on May 27.

This is being recognized as the result of Assemblyman Jeon Seungil’s strong commitment to addressing the climate crisis and building a sustainable circular economy structure.

The total budget for the Circular Economy Special Account in Seo-gu, Gwangju is 542.11 million won. The funds will be used for projects necessary to promote the transition to a circular economy society, such as operating unmanned recycling collection machines and resource circulation stores, with the goal of resource recovery and encouraging recycling of waste.

Assemblyman Jeon Seungil, who sponsored the ordinance, stated, “The introduction of the Circular Economy Special Account, being attempted for the first time in Gwangju, is significant not only for securing a budget, but also for establishing the independence and sustainability of resource circulation projects. Through the inclusion of this budget, we will create a recycling-friendly environment that residents can experience in their daily lives and take the lead in practicing carbon neutrality.”

An official from Seo-gu commented, “With the establishment of the special account, we can now operate resource circulation projects more systematically and stably. We will do our utmost to ensure that it becomes a nationwide model for the circular economy.”
