Yeongdeungpo Police in Seoul Decide Not to Refer Case, Citing Lack of Evidence
Assemblyman Ahn Cheolsoo of the People Power Party, who was reported to the authorities for describing last year's knife attack on President Lee Jaemyung as "lying as if dead after having his neck scratched," has been cleared of charges.
The Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul announced on December 22 that it had decided not to refer Assemblyman Ahn's case for prosecution, citing lack of evidence regarding the alleged violation of the Public Official Election Act for spreading false information.
On March 19, Assemblyman Ahn stated on Facebook, "Avoiding the AI public debate he (then Democratic Party leader Lee Jaemyung) himself proposed is similar to his behavior in Busan, where he was lying as if dead after having his neck scratched."
This remark referred to the incident on January 2 of last year, when President Lee was stabbed in the neck with a knife by a man in his 60s at the site of the new airport in Gadeokdo, Busan. The Democratic Party's legal committee filed a police report, claiming it constituted serious defamation through the dissemination of false information.
The police conducted an investigation for about seven months but concluded that it was difficult to apply criminal charges and closed the case.
